‘On account of this, take up the full armor of God, in order that you may be able to resist in the evil day and have done everything, to stand.’ (v.13)
Teaching through this passage tonight as our Shepherding Group wraps up Ephesians. So often our cry as Christians and our struggle is to battle against sin and by grace to keep moving forward. While the idea of pressing forward is often highlighted in Scripture (see Hosea 6:3, Philippians 3:12-14, I Timothy 6:11,12, II Timothy 2:22), I’m so thankful for this passage in Ephesians and the reminder to ‘take up the full armor of God…to stand’. What a comfort! What a relief to know that we don’t have to advance the battle lines or forge ahead in new victories! We are simply called to equip ourselves in order to stand! Lewis Chafer summerized our role well when he said, ‘In this connection, it is interesting to observe that as pilgrims we walk, as witnesses we go, as contenders we run, and as fighters we stand.’
Spend some time today in Ephesians 6 – marvel at the marvelous way in which God has equipped us for the spiritual battle we face, but be encouraged that the battle is already won! Victory belongs to the Lord and our job is simply to take up the full armor of God so that we are prepared to stand.
